PTRCA 2.0: A GROUNDBREAKING PROGRAM GETS AN UPGRADE

Since 2008 the Porsche Training and Recruitment Center Asia (PTRCA) in Manila has been offering Filipinos from underprivileged backgrounds career opportunities as “Mechatronics,” or elite technical specialists for Porsche vehicles. The brands Audi and Volkswagen now become new cooperation partners in this initiative. In future the companies are planning together recruiting junior technical staff from PTRCA, with job opportunities mainly in the Middle East region. The development of the PTRCA to PTRCA 2.0 with the new cooperation partners means that much more young Filipinos will be accepted in the training program. Instead of the current 32 trainees per year, in 2016 there will be 120 and in 2017 even 145.

The PTRCA first began when Robert Coyiuto, Jr., Chairman and CEO of PGA Cars, Inc., observed that his local technicians were often being pirated internationally through the global Porsche network. “I discussed with a member of the Porsche AG board the possibility of setting up a training school in the Philippines, because our technicians were highly sought-after worldwide,” he recalled. Fortunately, Porsche AG was impressed by the practicality and potential of Coyiuto’s brainchild, and thus the PTRCA was born. “We are proud to be the very first training facility of Porsche outside of Germany, and remain fully committed to invest in the future of our underprivileged youth,” Coyiuto further emphasized. 


In the past six years, in cooperation with PGA Cars and Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI), Porsche has already trained more than 250 young adults as motor vehicle service mechatronic technicians. They cover the sports car manufacturer's growing demand for qualified specialists, especially in the Porsche centres in the Middle East and Asia Pacific growth markets. “Good English language skills and the good work ethic the people of the Philippines are known for are beneficial here”, explains Michael Drolshagen, Head of After Sales at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, the reason for setting up the PTRCA in Manila. Training there was and remains first and foremost a recruitment program. “But of course for us it means also practising social responsibility. Because a qualification from the PTRCA not only gives these young adults access to the international labour market, it also gives them a real opportunity to noticeably improve their own living conditions and to strengthen their family environment.”


Starting this year, PTRCA extends its scope by including Audi and Volkswagen for the Middle East region.  Benoit Tiers, Group Managing Director of AVME (Audi Volkswagen Middle East) comments: “The program has proven its value and we can build on it quickly and easily. It demonstrates the strengths of our Group by using synergies and know-how across the Volkswagen Group brands. We will be closely involved in the PTRCA 2.0 in the next years as we plan to participate in the development of the curriculum, but also to look at further training for teachers and eventually the equipment. The expansion of the PTRCA program to include a body technician apprenticeship and from 2017 service advisor training programs lends additional dynamism. This noticeably further increases the benefits for all Volkswagen Group brands and the dealer network.”

Given that PTRCA 2.0 will now service the manpower needs of Porsche, Audi, and Volkswagen, the number of scholars and the logistical requirements of the course will understandably increase. This year, 60 trainees will participate in the program, and from 2016 onwards, a total of 120 trainees in two waves. The training will be comprised of four semesters (approximately 2,200 teaching hours in 24 months), with two examinations. The hands-on portion of the curriculum will likewise increase as the training progresses. 

The Order Salesians Don Boscos play a major role in the overall structure of the PTRCA. With its Don Bosco Technical Institute the society has outstanding educational expertise and excellent technical know-how. In addition, the Salesians Don Boscos are the ideal partner for working with underprivileged young people. With their long-standing presence they enjoy a high level of acceptance, especially in the poor districts of the Philippines. “The Salesians Don Boscos are extremely well geared to our needs. And the fact that they are represented in 132 countries means that we can multiply the training program at any time, too”, says Dr Stefan Lutz, Director After Sales Market Qualification and Support at Porsche. His team has been responsible for the operational support of PTRCA right from the start. Among other tasks the team is concerned with the training content of the 24-month apprenticeship.


The development of the PTRCA to PTRCA 2.0 with the new cooperation partners Audi Volkswagen Middle East means that in future even more space is needed. So it's good that the Don Bosco Technical Institute is currently building a new 6,000 square metre training centre in Manila. On an area of about 1,500 square metres it will house seminar rooms and training workshops for the PTRCA 2.0 for the brands Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen. With the appropriate equipment the brands also ensure that the young people are instructed in accordance with state-of-the-art technology. In addition, thanks to future cooperation agreed with the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, after their final examination they will receive a certificate that can be even better compared with the European qualifications framework.

As to what the future has in store for the scholars of PTRCA 2.0, Coyiuto gave the following advice: “The road ahead will be demanding, but I urge all of you to face every challenge as an opportunity, and with perseverance and fortitude, to achieve victory at the end.  The PTRCA has given you a once in a lifetime opportunity that is limited to a select group. Work hard, give it your best, and keep learning,” he concluded. 




TWITTER AND NESCAFE BLEND TOGETHER FOR REAL-TIME COFFEE EXPERIENCE

Twitter announced a partnership with NESCAFÉ to unveil a whole new drinking experience with the NESCAFÉ RED MUG Machine live via Periscope this weekend, the best way to share and watch live video broadcasts from your mobile phone. This is part of a larger digital video campaign, which includes the debut of Niche creators Marc Morgan and Gwri Panner in Asia to develop original Vine content for NESCAFÉ Philippines that will launch on @NESCAFEPH.

This is the first time a brand in Asia Pacific is using Niche, a network of over 20,000 social media creators. As part of Twitter's Brand Strategy team, Niche executes marketing campaigns across the creator network alongside hundreds of leading brands and advertisers. For this campaign, the creative duo will create a series of Vines in the NESCAFÉ theme of #StartCreating that will launch this December. The multifaceted video campaign from NESCAFÉ Philippines is geared towards the launch of the newNESCAFÉ RED MUG Machine, a convenient and easy-to-use appliance that prepares café-like concoctions for coffee aficionados in the comfort of their own homes.

With Periscope, people can participate in the live broadcast of coffee moments with local celebrity and newly appointed NESCAFÉRED MUG brand ambassador, Raymond Gutierrez, leaving him comments and hearts as he introduces the new machine. Using the state-of-the-art coffee maker, Periscope viewers can learn a new coffee recipe from Raymond in real-time as he prepares his own version of the Vanilla Chilled Coffee at the event, as well as join Raymond and his friends in their holiday season games and celebrations.

BE THE KITCHEN SUPERSTAR WITH HOLIDAY RECIPES FROM HUNT'S

I know a lot of you are busy thinking on what to prepare for Noche Buena for your salo-salo with your loved ones. Prepare exceptional dishes that are perfect for the feast during the much-awaited time of the year.

Cook fuss-free dishes that the family will surely love this holiday season. Impress them with Pulled Pork Rigatoni and Classic Beef Mechado, made with Hunt’s Tomato & Spaghetti Sauces.

CLASSIC BEEF MECHADO

There’s nothing like a classic dish such as Beef Mechado at the center of the holiday table. Enjoy this beef stew delicacy with assorted vegetables in Hunt’s Tomato Sauce.

Ingredients:
1 Kg Hunt’s Tomato Sauce
1 cup onion, diced
2 tbsp garlic, minced
  1/4 cup oil
1 can whole button mushrooms  
1 to 2 pcs. bay leaf  
1/2 tbsp whole peppercorns
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 Kg pork fat, cut into large cubes
1.5 Kg beef shortplate, cut in desired serving sizes (cook until tender)
3 to 4 cups beef stock
1 medium red bell pepper, cut into large cubes
1/2 cup green olives, pitted
Procedure:
Start by drizzling olive oil in a pot over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic for a few minutes, 
then add the one kilo pack of Hunt’s Tomato sauce. Add in the bay leaves, peppercorns, 
salt and sugar then let it simmer for 10 minutes. 

On a separate pan, sauté and render the pork fat in high heat. 
Add in the beef chunks and wait until it darkens. This should take around 5 minutes.

Transfer the cooked meat to the simmering Mechado sauce pot and let the meat simmer 
in it until it’s thick. Finally, drop the bell peppers, olives and mushrooms in and let simmer 
for five more minutes, and then it’s ready to serve. This makes 9 to 12 servings.

PULLED PORK RIGATONI


Amaze the family by incorporating shredded pork in a pasta dish with the Pulled Pork Rigatoni recipe. Combine braised pork with Hunt’s Basil & Cheese Spaghetti Sauce and rigatoni cooked al dente for an exciting pasta meal.

Ingredients:

¾ Kg pork kasim
1 pack Hunt's Basil & Cheese Spaghetti Sauce 1Kg
½ tbsp garlic, minced
1 pc onion, chopped
250g bacon, sliced
½ cup parmesan cheese
½ tsp paprika 
500g rigatoni pasta
3 pcs bay leaf
3 tbsp oil
1 tsp salt
½ tsp white pepper

Procedure:

However fancy and daunting this dish sounds, it’s actually very easy to make. Start off by boiling the pork kasim in a pot with three bay leaves for 30 minutes. Drain the pork, shred it and set aside. One can simultaneously prepare the rigatoni pasta on a separate pot.

Meanwhile, fry bacon and pork in a large pan until crispy. Portion the crisped bacon and pork. Set aside half of it for garnish later and keep the other half in the pan. Sauté in the garlic and onions together with the remaining crisped bacon and pork in the pan. Sprinkle in paprika, salt, and white pepper before adding in the Hunt’s Basil and Cheese Spaghetti Sauce. Let this simmer for a few minutes.

Finally, drain out the rigatoni then mix it well with the pulled pork sauce. Serve with cheddar cheese and crispy bacon and pork on top for ultimate satisfaction. This makes 9-12 servings.

Easy peasy, right? Just remember to do everything with love. :)

It's movie season once again. And if you're from the Philippines you know its time for Metro Manila Film Festival aka MMFF. This is the season where we entertain ourselves watching Filipino movies. From drama, comedy, action, MMFF is where Filipino movie makers shines. But this time around, MMFF found a partner that will help showcase Filipino talents and creativity in making movies.

The MMFF New Wave category has been around since 2010 to give the opportunity to independent filmmakers to showcase their entries and the chance to take home prize money that could potentially be used to fund future film projects.

This year’s finalists were selected by a jury out of hundreds of national submissions. The New Wave category consists of 5 animation and 5 short film. And for only 10 minutes each, we can enjoy watching these movies in one sitting.

Out of the thousands of entries, let me share with you 5 finalists who made it in the short story category:

Lapis follows the career shift of a pencil artist in his 50s as he applies for a job as a graphic artist only to be confronted by the realization that his medium of expertise is defunct in a modern world.  This moving film that addresses the conflict of analog vs. digital artistry was inspired by real stories of unemployment in the country.  Written and directed by Maricel Cariaga of Center Stage Productions, this is her third competition after UP POV 11 and Sinkwento International Film Festival, wherein she placed top 3 for both.

Daisy, a story about a wife and mother Barbara who orders a Proxy Daisy robot to take care of household duties, only for Barbara to have a growing realization that there may be something very wrong with the robot that she has let into her families’ lives.  Written and directed by Bryan Reyes of Colegio de San Lorenzo, this is his first film competition that he joined on a whim and shot two days prior to the contest deadline.

Ding Mangasyas (Tough Guys) centers on 2 brothers who have had a lifelong love-hate relationship filled with violence.  They’re faced with the emotional reality of separation as one of them packs up to work in the US. The film was directed by Justine Emmanuel Dizon and written by Jason Paul Laxamana of Kayumanggi Pictures, who was initially discouraged by the rejection of this same film in another competition.  This is his first national competition, and he is proud to show off the “homegrown” talents of his team who are from Pampanga like him.

Momento features an ageing couple, Teresita and Ronaldo, as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary--despite Teresita having made a terrible discovery earlier in the film that “marks the darkest hour of their relationship.”  Written and directed by Jan-Kyle Nieva of the UP Film Institute, Nieva states that he enjoys disturbing films and made this film to challenge himself into delving into a genre that he has not previously explored.

Mumu is about a fresh grad named Kara who resists pursuing a nursing career despite her nagging mother and pressure from witnessing the success of her friends.  She also finds herself being haunted by a ghost – a character she had played in a blockbuster horror film. Mumu is directed by Cheryl Tagyamon from UP Diliman, who also wrote the film.  Mumu has thus far won 3rd place in the National Digital Arts Awards 2014 Motion Graphics Category for Students, and in the UP Film Institute’s Black Beret Film Festival it won the Audience Choice Award, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Performance.

And 5 finalists who made it in the animation category are:

My fave, The Seed by Joven Maniaol shows the relationship of a man and his wife’s dog, with whom he does not favor, and how this relationship develops when the dog irrevocably ruins an anniversary surprised prepared by the husband.  The film was inspired by the Pixar animated film UP and French film “Floating in my Mind.”

Geo was written and directed by John Aurthur Mercader of Puppeteer Animation Studio has previously won the grand prize for Animahenasyon, the biggest animation film festival in the country.  His team also won best in technical quality, Best Animation in Category B (6-30 mins.), and the Hero TV Choice Award in Animahenasyon.  The short is about young Geo with a wild imagination, whose mother must always come to his rescue whenever he takes it a step too far.

Sofi's fave, Alamat ng Giraffe, directed by Alyssandra Kyle Mallari and written by Karl Marlo Gonzales and Mel Jeffrey Jabido of De La Salle College of St. Benilde, tells a made-up legend on how the giraffe came to be.

Little Lights by was written and directed by Rivelle Mallari, the only finalist submission that claims no affiliation to a school or studio.  It is a touching story about a physically weak yet strong-willed firefly named Charlie who struggles with his fear of darkness and finding his place within the firefly community. 

Each film is under 10 minutes  and is now showing from December 17 to 24 at Glorietta 4, Robinsons Movie World Ermita and SM Megamall.  You can watch all these ten entries in your HOOQ app.

Vic Sotto plays the role of Vito who finds himself at odds and in a bitter professional rivalry with Cora, played by Ai-Ai. The two are both in the business of mounting special events and productions and have both made a successful name in the same profession. The conflict happens when their respective wards – Anna (played by Maine) daughter of Vito, gets romantically entangled with Cora’s beloved nephew Dondi (played by Alden). As expected, the “parents” actively reject the budding romantic involvement between the star-crossed lovers and willingly struck an unexpected truce to prevent this romance from happening.

The plot thickens when the unexpected alliance of the Vito and Cora starts blooming into something else. Now, it’s the turn of the youngsters to feel disconcerted with the idea of having their folks enter into a different relationship zone.  Now it was the turn of Dondi and Anna to react to the situation. They did not like the idea of his auntie and her father falling in love with each other.  Now it was the younger generation vehemently reacting to this new romance.
